Threshold Review: FlightFactor 777-200ER v2 Ultimate for X-Plane
February 11, 2025
Introduction
The Boeing 777-200ER is the second variant of the Boeing 777 series. Following the original Boeing 777-200, the 777-200ER (with "ER" standing for Extended Range) was introduced in 1997. This variant boasts an impressive range of 7,065 nautical miles, significantly higher than the 5,240 nautical miles of its non-ER counterpart. As of 2019, a total of 422 Boeing 777-200ER aircraft have been delivered to 33 different customers.

The add-on was initially released through a non-public alpha phase, followed by a public beta period, which is where it currently stands. It is important to note that at the time of this review, the add-on is still in beta. The FlightFactor team has indicated that only the VNAV feature remains to be fully completed. While the VNAV is functional, it is not yet perfect, but it is close to being finalized. With this context in mind, let's delve into the details of this aircraft.

First Impressions
I am quite familiar with the Boeing 777 in the virtual skies. Having flown the PMDG Boeing 777-300ER in Microsoft Flight Simulator numerous times, this aircraft type is not entirely new to me. The 777 is one of my favourite long-haul aircraft. Therefore, when I learned that the highly anticipated version for X-Plane had been released, I was eager to try it out for myself.
Upon loading the aircraft for the first time, I was greeted with a welcome widget that hinted at the numerous details that awaited me.
My initial impression of the cockpit was very positive. The level of detail was impressive, and I found myself unsure of where to begin exploring. The same can be said for the exterior of the aircraft, which is exquisitely detailed, revealing many elements to discover.

Aircraft Systems
The aircraft is equipped with a variety of complex and highly accurate systems. It comes with a comprehensive 80-page manual that provides essential information for users. Additionally, there is a detailed 528-page Flight Crew Operations Manual that explores the operational protocols and procedures, along with extensive Flight Performance Tables to assist in calculating various performance metrics crucial for flight planning.
A Cockpit Guide is also included, serving as a valuable resource for familiarizing crew members with the cockpit layout and functionalities. This extensive array of documentation ensures that users have plenty of information at their fingertips regarding both the aircraft’s specifications and its intricate systems.
The add-on features custom-designed systems that simulate the aircraft’s electrical, hydraulic, fuel, air management, navigation, and flight control mechanisms, along with several other critical systems. Each component has been meticulously crafted to replicate the real Boeing 777 as closely as possible, offering users a highly immersive experience.
While I do not have real-life experience flying the Boeing 777, I am thoroughly impressed by the developers' attention to detail in mirroring the aircraft’s systems. Their commitment to authenticity is evident in the thoughtful design and functionality of the add-on, making it a remarkable achievement for enthusiasts and virtual pilots alike.

Flight Model
The Boeing 777-200ER is a wide-body aircraft that is known for its significant weight throughout all phases of flight. In comparison to lighter jets like the Boeing 737-800, the considerable mass of the 777-200ER greatly affects its flight dynamics and overall performance. When flying the 777-200ER in the simulator, the sensation of its weight is distinctly felt. The aircraft feels robust and solid in the air, creating an experience that differs markedly from the agility of lighter aircraft.
Despite its heavier build, the 777-200ER is engineered for high manoeuvrability, evident during handling. Overall, the 777-200ER performs predictably for its class, allowing users to anticipate a stable and reliable flight experience consistent with the expectations for an aircraft of this size.

Sounds
The sound design of this add-on is truly exceptional. It features a complex audio landscape that ranks among the finest I’ve encountered in a flight simulation. Every button, knob, and lever has its own carefully crafted sound, adding a layer of realism that enhances the overall immersion.
The engine noises are particularly impressive when sitting on the wing right next to it, with a rich depth that accurately captures the roar of the aircraft in flight, allowing users to truly feel the power of the engines. Additionally, ground-handling communications are delivered in clear voices, allowing players to hear and understand crucial instructions and interactions with ground control.
Another standout feature is the well-produced PA announcements, which reflect real-world protocols and procedures, further enriching the simulation experience.
It's refreshing to see a considerable investment in sound design, especially in a market where this aspect is often overlooked by developers. The attention to detail in the audio elements greatly contributes to the believability and enjoyment of the overall flight simulation experience.

Exterior model
The exterior model of the aircraft is impressive, demonstrating a level of detail that rivals the high standards set by the development team in their previous add-ons. Every aspect, from the intricately designed landing gear with its cables and bolts to the accurate warning stickers on the engines, reflects meticulous craftsmanship.
High-resolution textures enhance the visual appeal. This attention to detail creates an exterior that is both striking and immersive, capturing the essence of the real-life counterpart.

Interior model and cockpit
The cockpit features a highly detailed, high-resolution 3D design, with meticulous attention given to every element, from the textured floor to the interactive flight displays and overhead panels. It also includes some fun features, such as a functional oxygen mask, a deployable escape rope for safety, and a humorous disposable coffee cup that adds a touch of realism.
The cabin is equally impressive, divided into first class, business class, and economy class, with customizable row configurations. This design enhances the overall experience, allowing users to fully enjoy the view from their seats and making every flight feel authentic and immersive.

Attention to detail
The team at FlightFactor has clearly devoted a great deal of attention to detail. In addition to all the standard features one would expect, the add-on includes many impressive extras that enhance realism. The aircraft comes equipped with an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) that offers hundreds of options, providing plenty of functionality for users to explore. Additionally, there is a walk-around mode that allows users to inspect the aircraft before taking it into the air. An impressive pushback feature enables users to steer the pushback truck themselves. There are also numerous small details, such as movable cockpit chairs, various failures, operational doors, and much more, all contributing to the overall realism.

Performance
My setup includes an Nvidia RTX 3070 8 GB, Intel i5-12600K processor, 32 GB RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. The performance of the aircraft is impressive for such a detailed add-on. I have experienced no issues with performance, and at busy airports like TaiModels London Heathrow, I maintain a stable frame rate of 40 FPS.

Conclusion and final thoughts
This add-on is highly regarded, and deservingly so, making it one of the most impressive options for X-Plane. The attention to detail is exceptional, and each system is meticulously designed, demonstrating a strong commitment to realism. The upcoming full implementation of the VNAV feature is expected to enhance functionality further. Priced at $89.00, this add-on offers substantial value in the competitive flight simulation market.
A big thank you to FlightFactor for providing us with a copy to review!
