Welcome back to another edition of No Money Mondays! Today, we are checking out Puerto Princesa International Airport, located in the Palawan province in the Philippines. Serving the general area of Puerto Princesa, this airport is also the gateway to one of the 7 New Wonders of Nature—the Puerto Princesa Underground River.
The history of this airport began in 1942, during WWII when it was used for accommodating large Japanese transport aircraft. After the liberation of Palawan, it was used by US Army Air Force units until 1946, when US Army and Navy engineers rehabilitated the runway and constructed air control facilities and fuel tanks.
In 1947, Puerto Princesa Airport was finally opened for air travel. The first scheduled flight was operated by Philippine Airlines from Manila via San Jose and Mindoro with DC-3. In the early 1960s, the airport saw its first direct service to the Filipino capital, while the first jet aircraft touched down in the 1970s. The first wide-body aircraft to be welcomed in Puerto Princesa was PAL’s A300, which was also knows as the ‘Love Bus’.
In 2017, the new passenger and cargo terminals were opened, along with a new apron, taxiways and air navigation systems. Currently, the aircraft serves 5 airlines to 5 domestic destinations (Cebu, Iloilo, Manila, Clark and Davao), with summer charters operated by Royal Air Philippines to Taipei.
The Puerto Princesa Intl’ Airport rendition by TurtleTank1997 features custom terminals, an enhanced new terminal parking area, PAF Apron, custom textures, and an accurate runway slope.
