This week, we’re broadening our horizons from the mountains of Nepal to the vast and varied landscapes of the entire planet.

Specifically, we’re looking at the We Love VFR Project by Puffin Flight for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. The addon enhances VFR flying by placing landmarks around the world such as smoke stacks, antennas, radar dishes and many more objects that can be used for VFR navigation!

The project comes in three different regions, all having objects placed accurately where they should be in the real world! Region one includes Europe, Africa, and parts of the Middle East, Region two includes North and South America, as well as Greenland, and Region three includes Asia and Oceania. To provide a sense of how far reaching this add-on is, over 150,000 objects were placed just in Region One alone!

It uses a custom-built program to accurately place over 100 custom models throughout the virtual world of MSFS. Objects such as smokestacks, chimneys, and cooling towers feature custom steam and smoke effects that vary depending on the width of the opening and the outside air temperature. Not just can it place industrial objects, it also features large crosses being dotted around the world! It also features detailed obstacle data from 30 countries. You can get all of this with minimal impact on system performance, especially when it comes to lower-spec systems.
